1.      What’s your favorite thing about writing?
I think my favorite thing is being able to create whole new worlds and control everything that happens in them. I don’t have that kind of power in real life and sometimes it’s just nice to say This Thing is going to happen Here. Why? Because I want it to!

2.  What are your top 3 must-read books? 

Oh that’s such a tough question! How about top 3 series J The first is the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. There’s romance, a kick-butt heroine, and lots of action. The Grisha Series (Shadow and Bone, etc) by Leigh Bardugo. It’s YA fantasy of the best kind – smart, exciting, and romantic. And the third would be anything by Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice is one of my comfort reads. (OMG I LOVE THE GRISHA SERIES TOO!!!)

3.      What are your favorite ice cream flavors? Sea salt Caramel gelato. (Yum!)

4. Do you listen to music while writing? If so, what music?

I mostly listen to movie soundtracks when I write. I love all the atmospheric, dramatic scores, and because most of them don’t have words, they don’t trip me up when I’m trying to write.

5.      What’s your favorite place to write and/or read? 

My favorite place for both is curled up on my corner of the couch. Where I usually end up writing is my desk at work. Not nearly as comfortable!

6.      What inspired the title of this book?

The Athena is the main space ship from The Star Thief (the first book in the series). If I talk too much about the ashes part, there would be spoilers. Let’s just say the poor ship has a rough time of it in this book.

7.      What’s the best advice you’ve gotten as a writer? 

Write what you love and would like to read. Write what interests you. Most of all, have fun with your stories. Writing is hard, but the moment you stop enjoying it, is the moment you should stop writing.

Review:

A sweet story full of heart. :)

After I finished this one, I admit an audible “awww” escaped me.  It was a touching tale of a girl who, after being tossed around multiple homes, finally finds a family.

And if that doesn’t melt your heart, I don’t know what will. ;)

It’s really the characters that made this story.  There wasn’t really an overarching plot or anything, but rather it chronicles the life of Alyssa and her struggles to get through each day.  I loved Alyssa and watching her grow throughout the book.  While she's not fully healed at the end, she’s getting there, and with a group of people that cares for her and loves her, you know she’ll be alright. ;)

 Another favorite character of mine was Jessica.  She was so supportive and understanding, and she had a big heart that was not only big enough for Alyssa, but for her friends as well. While I did see that semi-plot twist a mile away, it in no way took away from all the things Jessica had done for Alyssa.  In fact, I felt it just made me love Jessica even more. :)

As for her friends, I adored Caleb (and yes I did sort of want Caleb and Alyssa to end of together!) and thought Brianna was a great friend as well. They were her rock and her family, and it was so sweet how they stuck with her through everything. I did,however, get the feeling the book was perhaps a bit overstuffed?   Every character had their own issues, and while there was nothing wrong with that (the world isn't perfect), I felt that there were just a lot of stuff that sort of seemed to be added in to try to make some of the characters seem more complex. Nonetheless, I did like how the issues were dealt with in the story and how realistic it was.  Another thing was that the villains in this novel (well, Alyssa’s mother primarily) seemed a little one-dimensional with no real depth to them; I wish we were able to see different sides of them. However, that doesn't take away from the fact that Alyssa’s mother was terribly wrong to say and do those things.

Review:

This book was a big old ball of WHAT JUST HAPPENED?

It started off really strong; we had the world built, the setting set, and a heroine with internal conflicts.  Awesome. 

Then we meet Ignifex, and everything starts going downhill from here.  I kid you not, the moment she meets him-like not even a scene or two later- but the exact MOMENT she meets him, Nyx's actions become face-palm worthy.

There is insta-love with TWO guys.  (Double the trouble...) Not even going to go there. All I’m going to say is that it was BAD BAD BAD- and I was led to believe by the blurb that she was actually going to spend time with him (them?) as she fell in love. Tsk tsk. 

As for the characters-or more specifically, the love interests-it was raining pretty boy cardboard. The heroine, Nyx, had started off as a seemingly complex and multi-dimensional character, but I was wrong (so. wrong.), and she became a little annoying as the book went on.  I was also frustrated because she had potential to be such a great character: one rife with internal conflicts, but eventually overcoming them to become a stronger person. But alas, it was not so.   It also didn't help that the book started to really drag in the middle.  Nyx spends her time wandering the castle and kissing.  And I… do believe that’s all she does. Oh, and she eats dinner with the guy. But otherwise, this book is just her wandering around to find stuff.  By the end, a whole bunch of things suddenly happen- which was REALLY confusing- and the book ends in typical fairy tale style. WHAT?!

I was so disappointed with this book because I was really looking forward to it.   I absolutely love re-tellings of fairy tales, and that beginning really led me to think that this book was going to be one awesome retelling.

Review:

A fun book (for the most part), but forgettable.

My feeling towards this book went from “like” to “dislike” as the book went on.   At the beginning, this book was fun. The characters were fun, their dynamics were fun, and the plot was whipping along (but not too fast). Fun.

But towards the end, the book became predictable, REALLY rushed, and too neatly wrapped up. Not fun.

I had this same problem with Hex Hall too.  The beginning started off strong, and then the ending just ruined it.  The plot just built and built, but the ending gave us nothing- wait I take that back.  The ending left us with a big old:  WHAT just happened?? It went by SO fast, and it was SO random.

But as a whole- minus the ending- the book was enjoyable, but nothing crazy good. It was a good one-time read and one time read only.

As for the characters, I liked Izzy because she was a fun character, who, despite being all tough and "the monster cop," was also cringe-worthy  awkward, esp. when it came to boys. ;) And TORIN! Oh my goodness, his addiction to those teen chick TV series was HILARIOUS.  Not to mention, he was also swoony. ;) I loved their bickering friendship (?), and until Dex came along, I was actually rooting for her and him to get together. Since there aren’t any sequels planned at the moment (which I kind of want, kind of don’t-more on that later), I guess we won’t be able to see how their relationship turns out in the end because I think Torin has a crush on Izzy.  When Dex entered the picture, I thought there was going to be a love triangle (Nooooo!), but I was glad that Izzy shut that possibility down (sort of) and didn’t string the guy along (but who knows what’ll happen in the future?).

I also loved their group of misfits!  :) Romy and Izzy had a very sweet friendship, where Romy totally brought out the girly side (a bit rusty, but it was there ;) ) of Izzy, while Izzy and Dex (wink, wink) made for a really cute couple (NO INSTA-LOVE!! :D).  I love a cute, dorky romance, and  Izzy and Dex were that cute, dorky couple. ;)  With Izzy’s awkwardness on all things boys and Dex’s own loveable uniqueness, this relationship was my favorite thing about the book. :)

Now about that sequel…  If that sequel ends anything like this book, then I DON’T WANT IT. On the other hand, there were tons of things the author left open that I do want to see resolved.  If the sequel answered those with a fabulous ending, then maybe I’d read it.  But until then, who knows? ;)

Review :

This book surprised me- in a really good way.  Based on the blurb, I didn’t think this was a time-traveling novel, and I still didn’t believe it until she, well, actually time-traveled. LOL. I really liked how that time traveling aspect was played out. Time-traveling in this book wasn't for some mission to save human-kind, but rather time-traveling is very personal for the traveler.  I’m still not sure as to why she leaps back (there are a few hints), but I’m assuming that will be cleared up in future books (which I am ANXIOUSLY waiting for!!). The book started off kind of slow, but it picked up its pace as it went on, and in fact, towards the end, I began nervously counting down the pages I had left.  This book ended too soon!!

I was a bit indifferent towards the main characters in the beginning because there was a lot of telling, rather than showing, but as the book progressed, they all grew on me.  Riley was an interesting character because she does grow throughout the novel, but I feel her real growth is still to come in the future books.  This is just the beginning- and I'm so excited for that future awesome character development!! :) (In fact, I felt this book in general was really just to set up the series and to help set up the future books and the characters. Not a bad thing- except for the fact that I need more D':) 

I sort of sense a love triangle between Nathan and Lucas- and I have really complicated feelings about this (LOL). For one thing, Lucas is in the past, so I don’t know how that’s going to work?? But they actually had a great chemistry, and it wasn't insta-love (YAY!).  I liked their relationship, and while they’ve only known each for a few days, there was like this connection between them.  This couple had this feeling of those first few days when you first fall in love. :) With Nathan, he and Riley had been friends since they were young, and I felt his development was a little lacking.  I think this had to do with the fact that there was a lot of telling and not so much showing in the beginning of the novel; also, because they were childhood friends, we were supposed to just assume that they were close. I REALLY hope we do get to see more of Nathan’s and Riley’s relationship in future books.  As for the love triangle in general, I am not a big fan of them because they are tricky. BUT I have seen some great love triangles (even though I thought that that was NEVER possible), and I’m just assuming that there might be one here; I won’t know for sure until I get my hands on that second book… D:   

Final thoughts: This book has a warm feeling to it. I didn't really address this in the review because this warm feeling was more towards the end (even though it did sort of permeate throughout the book I guess?).  It's kind of hard to explain, but I think this warm feeling comes from the fact that this book is a lot about relationships and possibilities- and there’s always something about those two things that gives me a sense of hope. ;)

One of the things I loved about this book is that it introduced me to so many new (well old new LOL) music. I liked a lot of them, but I only picked two from the book because I felt these were the ones that really fit with the mood of the novel.   

I’ve never done a playlist for a book before, so I’m not exactly sure if there was a certain way to do this or something LOL.  I picked the first two songs from the book, and the rest I sort of picked to suit the mood of the book I guess? :D. Click on the title to go to the Youtube video. :)

Miracles in December by Exo (So I'm not really a fan of Exo, but I actually liked this song.  That title doesn't fit the book LOL, but I felt this song, along with Cordelia, would be something that Lucas would have sang for Riley-ya know, if he could speak Korean LOL :D And also this song is kind of dramatic, but the lyrics fit perfectly. ;) )

Yuugure no Yakusoku- Toradora Ost (Pretty piano song that I can imagine Riley playing.)

Yasashisa no Asioto- Toradora Ost (Nice guitar song I can imagine Lucas playing.)
